Right now is the run up to award season; which means we are currently in shortlist season. Following on from the announcements of the RIBA Stirling Prize Shortlist and also the World Building of the Year Shortlist, comes the latest – the EyeEm 2016 Awards Shortlist.

For those of you who don’t know – EyeEm represents the largest photography competition for emerging talent. This year, in the third annual photography awards, EyeEm received  270,000 submissions from over 38,000 photographers in 150 countries worldwide. In actual fact, those numbers represent what is so great about the competition; the eclecticism, vivacity and strength that a pool of emerging photographers create when all their work is pulled together into one fiercely competitive, and fiercely impressive catalogue of images.

The competition also readily addresses the fact that everyone can now take images on almost any device, and so the EyeEm platform represents an opportunity for undiscovered talents to grow and become professionals. The job of identifying those talents is entrusted to this year’s awards jury, which includes representatives from the Wold Press Photo, National Geographic, Magnum Photos amongst others, who have selected the top 20 images from each of five categories – The Architect, The Great Outdoors, The Photojournalist, The Portraitist and The Street Photographer.

Every one of the 20 selected images across each category will be exhibited at the 2016 EyeEm Photography Festival & Awards in Berlin on the 27 August 2016. Enjoy a few of our favourites from the collection in the image gallery below and for a closer look at the entire shortlist head to the EyeEm blog.
