Devon Clay Espresso Cup

(Free Shipping & Returns)

These cups are made entirely within a 10-step radius at our studio on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. We dig up the clay - an earthenware dotted with china clay - just outside our back door, and then refine it multiple times through differing sieves before leaving it to dry in cotton sheets hanging from the house. Once in this state it is possible to turn it into slip (liquid clay) to enable us to create objects from it. Initially a deep ochre yellow, the clay turns to a deep orange after it is fired.

We want to elevate this natural material, it’s so ubiquitous and yet so much work goes into making it into something useable. It’s a process that’s as old as time but one that nowadays we take for granted. We wanted to reconnect the user of the cup with the raw material. It’s made – literally – from the mud under our feet, so we’ve left the base unglazed to highlight the beautiful colour of the clay.

The first collection comprises a series of espresso cups - thin-walled little cups with our dimpled profile to sit perfectly in the hand, covered in a thin veil of tin white glaze but left unglazed at the base to accentuate the beautiful russet colour of the clay. Each is handmade, and no two are identical.
