You can't beat the classics. Or can you? Footwear styles like the Derby and the moc-toe are rooted in centuries of shoemaking tradition. But that commitment to the old ways often comes at the expense of comfort. CLAE’s new Heritage Line feels like reaction to this conundrum, offering a modern interpretations of classic shoemaking, designed with comfort and modern life in mind, all while staying true to the originals.
You probably know the Los Angeles-based brand for its pared-back sneakers – clean, minimal, no fuss. But the Heritage Line, launching for Spring/Summer 2025, takes things in a slightly different direction. Less court sport, more cobbled street. The collection introduces two new styles, the Morrison and the Logan, both perched atop a sturdy lug sole designed to handle the daily grind – from slick pavements to weekend countryside detours.

There’s a considered practicality here that doesn’t detract from the aesthetics. The chunky sole adds a contemporary edge without veering into mountaineer cosplay. Instead, it feels like the sort of thing that slots neatly into a modern wardrobe – wearable with selvedge denim, wide-leg trousers or even casual tailoring, should the mood strike.

Clae Heritage: Shoes made sustainably
Of course, no collection worth its salt in 2025 ignores sustainability. CLAE, as always, keeps things thoughtful, working with LWG-certified leathers and nubucks, recycled linings and insoles, and soles crafted from natural and recycled rubber blends. The result is a shoe that looks and feels premium without the moral hangover.

It’s also pleasingly versatile. Derby shoes, moccasins, and upscale sneakers form the backbone of the line, with functional details like water-repellent uppers and cushioned EVA insoles adding to the appeal. These are shoes designed for everyday wear – capable of withstanding the odd downpour without sacrificing polish.

Since 2001, CLAE has specialised in footwear that sits comfortably between sport and street, championing minimalist design and premium materials. The Heritage Line feels like a natural evolution – a thoughtful step forward, still stripped back, but with a little more weight and craft underfoot. A reminder that sometimes, it pays to return to the classics.
