Form over function, or function over form. Most brands pick a side and go all in. Either full technical credibility or something with the edges softened for the city at the expense of outdoor performance. The new Houdini x Demon Silvestre shoe is, in our humble opinion, about as close as you're going to get to something that does both.
At its core, this is a trekking and approach shoe. But it doesn’t necessarily read like one at first glance. The silhouette is cleaner, more considered. Less mountaineering kit, more design object. It’s a reflection of the two forces behind it. Houdini, with its long-standing focus on circular design and sustainability, meets Demon, the Italian footwear specialist with longstanding roots in Montebelluna’s mountaineering industry.

Elements of a climbing shoe sit alongside the structure of an approach shoe and the protection of a mountaineering boot. There’s a robustness to it – reinforced rubber rand, supportive build, Vibram outsole – but it’s balanced by a level of refinement you don’t often see in this category.

Details do a lot of the work. A slip-on microfiber gaiter keeps debris out while giving the shoe a more streamlined profile. Underfoot, a super-crepe microporous midsole softens the ride without losing ground feel. It’s all assembled in Italy, which tracks given Demon’s heritage and the level of finish on show.

Of the wild
What’s more interesting is the intent behind it. Silvestre – “of the wild” – is designed to move between environments without friction. Not just physically, but visually too. It’s as comfortable on a loose alpine trail as it is on city pavement, which feels increasingly relevant as the boundaries between the two continue to blur.

This isn’t about pushing further or faster. It’s about moving differently. A shoe that adapts to its surroundings, rather than forcing you to adapt to it.
If you ancy a pair, the good news is that they're being made available globally. The bad news is that it's with an extremely select pool of boutique retailers. Your besrt bet is to go directly to Houdini or Demon, both of whom are selling the Silvestre through their own channels.
