The Swiss brand was founded in 2013 with the goal of reinvigorating the textiles industry through its production of unique artist-designed home textiles that fuse original designs with high quality materials.
Taking a somewhat unconventional approach to homeware design, ZigZagZurich joins forces with established and emerging artists across a broad spectrum of visual styles – spanning everything from illustration to abstract – to translate the artists' aesthetic codes into the medium of textiles. The result is an eclectic offering of bedding, bath towels, curtains, rugs and more, which serve as artworks in themselves, showcasing everything from Michele Rondelli's bold architecture-inspired prints to Christoffer Joergensen's atmospheric digital photography to Celine Cornu's delicate use of colour.
Not only does ZigZagZurich's range offer a breath of fresh air in terms of design, but its innovative approach to manufacturing is also to be commended. By taking full control over the supply chain from raw materials to finished products, the brand can offer locally crafted products that make use of high quality materials (think luxurious Egyptian cotton and alpaca wool), all the while adhering to strict social and environmental standards. Main production takes place in Italy, where textiles are hand-finished by artisans using age-old craftsmanship techniques. The quality is comparable to that of luxury products costing double or triple but a direct-to-consumer model means that prices are kept within an accessible range.
