With its smart-casual Spring/Summer 2018 collection set to drop online at OPUMO in the coming weeks, Copenhagen-based mfpen has just unveiled its Autumn/Winter 2018 release with a presentation in its home city. The new collection sees the brand put a twist on classic Scandinavian design and continue to develop its reputation for sophisticated and understated pieces.

Founded by designer Sigurd Bank, who comes from a background in clothing production and specialist sourcing, mfpen modernises menswear classics with rather significant characteristics. Most noticeably through heavy emphasis on both fabrics and detailing.

Despite being only a few seasons old, mfpen harbours a strong vision. By focussing on trans-seasonal essentials, which according to the brand was born from keeping the ‘unreliable Scandinavian weather in mind,’ it excels in modern oversized cuts and innovative fabric choices. For the Autumn/Winter 2018 campaign, mfpen builds on a baseline of subtle everyday colours – beige, olive, navy, black and off-white – in a range of warm chequered wool blends.

One of the key themes in the collection is the Prince of Wales check pattern, which appears on casual suiting, wool trousers and corduroy. A strong influence is also the traditional Scandinavian aesthetic, which is then given an update – for example, classic coat silhouettes are exaggerated into oversized cuts and staple trousers are cropped. This influence is also reflected in the presentation’s unique backdrop, with the iconic Danish primary school chair – a famous piece of modern design – arranged in a chaotic pile.
