We’re all looking for smaller speakers with the same power and quality as a hi-fi system. In 2020, as speakers get smaller thanks to huge leaps in technology, this is getting easier but it’s still not as simple as we’d like. Luckily, Ruark Audio have a history of making loudspeaker systems for audio enthusiasts. In 2006, Alan & Brian O’Rourke decided to apply their experience in sound systems to radios and smaller music systems. This means that we are treated to a range of conveniently sized, great sounding, beautiful speaker systems that suit any room in the house. We’ve been particularly taken by the MR1 Bluetooth Speaker System, so we thought we’d compile our thoughts about it.
The Ruark Audio MR1 Usability
Newly improved, the MR1 Mk2 retains all the attributes of the original, but with a fresh new look and updates to sound and connectivity, they are now better than ever. One of the things we love most about the Ruark MR1 system is its versatility. The speakers are a size that suits usage of all kinds. Whether you’re looking for new computer speakers, equipment for your turntable, or even a new upgrade to your TV, the MR1 is the Bluetooth speaker for the job.
The MR1 speaker system uses a linear Class A-B amplifier with a quality switch mode power supply. If this doesn’t mean anything to you, don’t worry. Basically, the MR1 features the kind of amplifier that’s used in the world’s leading audio equipment. When compared with new age digital amplifiers, the MR1 sounds more refined. What’s more, Ruark Audio developed custom loudspeaker units to fit the compact frame of the MR1. The audio system features a powerful neodymium motor system with affords better driver control, meaning the sound is tighter than most full size audio systems. Finally, the aptX Bluetooth receiver means using bluetooth doesn’t interfere with the sound quality, delivering crystal clear CD sound quality over wireless connection.
In fact, the new Ruark MR1s are wonderfully dynamic. The amount of sound subtlety conveyed is even greater than before, delivering a rich detail and a fluid sound that far outweighs its diminutive size.
Ruark MR1 Design
Everything used on the MR1 is there for a reason, even down to the materials which benefit sound quality. Although the Ruark MR1 Mk2s are incredible to listen to, their understated design - almost retro in its charm - is a massive part of the appeal too. The small handcrafted wooden cabinets are beautifully made and expertly sized, ensuring that they're the perfect size to sit on a table, desk, bookshelf, kitchen counter or even alongside a TV. What's more, the understated design is enhanced with the introduction of British milled fabric from Camira which sits proudly on the front of the MR1 and helps elevate the attractive design and warm acoustic properties.
The Overall Verdict
This compact, beautiful system doesn’t just look great, more importantly it sounds great. The refined audio technology means that no job is beyond this speaker. Its versatile sound quality is matched by its beautiful aesthetic and top of the range technological features. Ruark Audio have shown their experience with this set up, every base is covered.
