Each year sneakerheads around the world celebrate Air Max Day on March 26th, the day that marked the first Air Max 1 release in 1987. Some celebrate by exhibiting their personal trainer collections on social media while Nike usually announces some exciting developments to the Air Max timeline alongside design competitions.

This year, Nike made a surprise online release of one of the most futuristic shoes we’ve seen in years. The Nike Adapt Auto Max comes as the label’s third self-lacing sneaker and takes inspiration from Tinker Hatfield’s iconic Air Max 90 design as well as the Nike Mag which was made famous in Back to the Future.

The Nike Adapt Auto Max takes an equally as striking silhouette as the futuristic Nike Mag, featuring a one-piece synthetic upper and a gum outsole accompanied by a black line motif wrapping around the midsole.

The design is not only striking in its appearance, it includes some of Nike’s most exciting modern technologies that we can expect to become more and more prevalent in the future. Power-lacing technology as well as an integrated FITadapt function means that you can use the NIKE SNKRS app to customise your self-lacing fit as well as the LED light hidden in the midsole.

Releases like this cement Nike’s status as the most forward-thinking sneaker brand in the world. With legendary names like Tinker Hatfield offering his design influence as well as technology labs constantly developing new and exciting features, it seems unlikely that any other brand will accompany us into the future of sports footwear design.
