Most famous designers are famous because they added their unique style to a product. What makes Dieter Rams so special is that his unique style was to take things away. Rams is most celebrated for his work at Braun, effectively making the company a household name during the 1950s thanks to stripped-back, user-centric design. If you know anything about OPUMO, you’ll understand why we look up to Dieter Rams as one of the leading powers in a ‘less is more’ movement. To pay homage to Rams’ legacy, we’ve teamed up with our friends at L’Estrange to present the OPUMO x L’Estrange capsule collection.
When designing this collection, we tried to keep Dieter Rams’ 10 principles for good design in mind. Using three L’Estrange designs as the foundation, we explored options that followed a route of functionality, durability and style that has resulted in OPUMO x L’Estrange – a modern collection comprising a pair of smart men’s trousers, a versatile cotton shirt and a men’s T-shirt. First off though, what were Rams' 10 principles for good design?
Good design:
- Is innovative.
- Makes a product useful.
- Is aesthetic.
- Makes a product understandable.
- Is unobtrusive.
- Is honest.
- Is long-lasting.
- Is thorough down to the last detail.
- Is environmentally friendly.
- Is as little design as possible.
Although we've been championing these values for years through our curation, designing the OPUMO x L’Estrange collection was a new experience. It involved focusing on little details to set the pieces apart from the crowd without adding unnecessary details.
The 24 Trouser
This pair of slim-fit trousers is one of L’Estrange’s best sellers and for good reason. The versatile style can be worn in almost any occasion. Now in a perfect grey hue and featuring a key-fastening loop and carabiner.
The All Day Shirt
From a morning meeting all the way through to post-work drinks, The All Day Shirt is the one. Crafted from beautiful brushed Italian cotton combined with a hint of stretch, it fastens using poppers for ease and comfort.
The Tailored T-Shirt
In true L’Estrange style, this piece takes elements of formalwear and implants them into a men’s casual T-shirt. This T-shirt is cut from Supima cotton and features a back-pleat, subtle curved hem and split sides for ease of movement and to add a welcome twist to the crewneck T-shirt.
