The Kazerne

Where? Eindhoven, The Netherlands

There are a few notable feathers in Eindhoven’s cap. For one, the city helped nurture Ronaldo – the original one – the finest striker of his generation. Two, it’s the official birthplace of Phillips electronics, who also built the Philips Stadium, home to the PSV Eindhoven - Ronaldo’s first team in Europe. Connections. Anyway, the Dutch city, which is known as being a design powerhouse, now has a hotel to match its prestigious make-up.

Kazerne – a multi-functional modern complex based in a former military barracks and adjoining industrial warehouse – offers a home from home for creatives across the worlds of art, design, technology and food. In total, in the De Bergen neighbourhood of the city, a total of six buildings come together, fused by a concoction of glass, brick and steel that has been designed by Van Helmond Architecten to reflect the city’s deep design heritage.

The interior of Kazerne is not just a nod to the heritage of Eindhoven but more of a fully immersive design experience. The sweeping space celebrates the impact of design by inviting guests into an environment where they eat, drink, meet and sleep in and amongst the recent works of world-class design talent. In order to really concentrate the quality of design and the authentic hospitality experience, guest rooms – which includes rooms, suites and lofts – are limited to just eight in total. Minimal and largely monochromatic, the individual spaces offer a balance of light and dark and old and new by serving up key pieces from the finest Dutch design studios, including Studio Drift, Piet Hein Eek, Mieke Meijer and more.

All the private rooms are knitted closer together by a series of public spaces that exist in lieu of your ordinary lobby. Including the Kazerne CS, a private fire-lit hub that is only available to hotel guests and members that regularly plays host to the local creative community with regular shows, exhibits and talks.

Unlike any other inner-city hotel, Kazerne offers guests a comfortable and relaxed environment where they can experience, 24/7, how design adds value to the world in which we live.
