The surprise release dividing the watch community
Patek Philippe has launched the Cubitus, its first new collection in over two decades, sparking mixed reactions in the watch community. Leaked ahead of its official release due to a premature ad in Fortune magazine, the design closely resembles the brand’s iconic Nautilus, with a more angular, square case. The collection's highlight is the platinum Ref. 5822P, featuring a new Caliber 240 PS CI J LU movement and six patented innovations. Priced at $88,378, it stands out with a large date display at 12 o’clock.
The Cubitus range also includes two steel models: the olive green Ref. 5821/1A ($41,243) and the steel and rose gold Ref. 5821/1AR ($61,276). While some collectors expressed disappointment in its similarities to the Nautilus, Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern defended the design, citing both the Nautilus and other Patek models as inspiration.

The collection has been met with mixed reviews, but many expect high demand despite the initial backlash. Patek Philippe deliberately scaled back Nautilus production last year to make way for the Cubitus and address potential demand.

Cubitus: A new audience
Stern acknowledges the collection’s resemblance to past models but insists the Cubitus is a fresh approach aimed at younger buyers. Though some collectors criticised the design online, Stern remains confident in its success, emphasising that the first models will be reserved for Patek’s most loyal clients.

Despite its polarising reception, the Cubitus is expected to appeal to collectors who appreciate Patek Philippe’s blend of tradition and innovation. The collection may not yet have the iconic status of the Nautilus, but it signals a bold new direction for the luxury brand.

The limited availability, combined with Patek’s strategic planning, ensures that the Cubitus will remain a highly sought-after piece in the watch world. Only time will tell whether it will stand alongside the Nautilus in the brand’s storied history.
