In a landscape crowded with statement pieces and seasonal noise, the new ETQ Amsterdam and LENSE collab takes a quieter route. The GL 01 Matte Black is not designed to announce itself. Instead, it settles into daily life with the ease of something that feels inevitable.

ETQ Amsterdam has long built its reputation on restraint. Founded on the idea that good design should feel calm rather than declarative, the brand’s footwear and apparel strip away excess in favour of proportion, material quality and longevity. Over the years, ETQ has attracted an audience less interested in trends than in consistency. People who value objects that hold their place over time. Collaboration, when it happens, tends to follow that same logic: selective, purposeful and aligned with the brand’s broader worldview.

LENSE approaches eyewear with a similar mindset. Founded by Daniel Dalen, the brand sits at the intersection of optical performance and understated design. Dalen’s background in eyewear and his sensitivity to how frames interact with the face have shaped a collection that prioritises balance and comfort. His long-standing relationship with ETQ, first as a customer, then as a collaborator, gave this project its starting point. What followed was an extended dialogue rather than a brief. Moving slowly between Japan, Hong Kong and Amsterdam, absorbing influences without ever leaning on them too heavily.

GL 01 Matte Black: An exercise in restraint

The GL 01 frame reflects that process. Its silhouette is reduced to essential lines, neither overtly fashion-led nor purely technical. The matte black acetate keeps the look grounded, allowing the shape to do the work rather than surface detail. The lenses introduce a more functional layer. Photochromic blue-light technology allows them to remain clear indoors, preserving eye contact and expression, before shifting outdoors into a deep grey that offers full UV400 protection. The transition is subtle, almost unnoticed, which feels entirely intentional.

Practicality continues in the details. A double-sided coating improves clarity and resistance to scratches, while two fit options ensure the frame sits naturally across different face shapes. It is eyewear designed to move seamlessly between environments, from long hours behind a screen to time spent navigating the city.

Produced in a limited run and released exclusively through ETQ Amsterdam, the GL 01 Matte Black feels less like a seasonal product and more like a considered extension of both brands’ philosophies. It is an object shaped by use, by habit and by the quiet confidence that comes from knowing when to stop refining.
