We need to have a word about wet-weather footwear. People seem perfectly happy to drop a month's rent on a Gore-Tex Pro shell to keep them dry, but then team it with a pair of mesh sneakers that wet through at the mere suggestion of a puddle. Meanwhile, those who actually bother to seek out genuinely weather-appropriate footwear are met by either all-out hiking boots, a very sparse selection of waterproof sneakers, most of which don't look great, or wellies. But one London-based label might have cracked it. Meet the Purple Mountain Observatory Calyx.

Developed in collaboration with Italian sole specialist Vibram, the Calyx is a futuristic take on the humble camp shoe. It originally launched in 2025, but a fresh batch of colourways and updated sole treatments arrived in October 2026, making this an excellent time to get acquainted.

The most interesting thing about the Calyx is its construction. Rather than relying on stitched panels and conventional materials, the upper is moulded from a single sheet of specialised rubber using Vibram's StratX technology. The result is a completely seamless, waterproof shell with a sculptural appearance that looks like something halfway between a technical hiking shoe and a prop from a science-fiction film.

Grip for days
Underneath, a chunky Vibram Grivola outsole uses the brand's Megagrip rubber compound to provide traction on wet and dry surfaces. Combined with the slip-on construction, it makes the Calyx a compelling option for everything from muddy dog walks and wet-weather commutes to pottering around the campsite.

Of course, it's the styling that really sets it apart. With its exaggerated proportions, distinctive moulded upper and unapologetically utilitarian appearance, the Calyx sits comfortably alongside the sort of technical outerwear and relaxed trousers that have become staples of contemporary menswear. It's practical footwear that doesn't look like an afterthought.

Available in five colours, including black, stone, grey, green and brown, the Purple Mountain Observatory Calyx is priced at £150 and available now from the brand's website and select retailers.
