If there’s one Italian label that exemplifies luxury through and through, it’s Gucci. This is a company with a history so baroque that it’s sparked a blockbuster film, ‘House of Gucci' starring Lady Gaga and directed by Ridley Scott, who warmed up for this unlikely tale by directing ‘Bladerunner'. As anyone who’s enjoyed the movie will tell you, Gucci’s remarkable story dates back to 1921 when Guccio Gucci, who had experienced the taste of the super-rich when working at London’s Savoy Hotel, set up his own leather workshop in Florence to make high-end luggage, so beginning an Italian legend.
After early success, a variety of family feuds followed - and by the late 1980s the deluxe spirit of Gucci seemed in decline, largely reduced to licensing its name. A new executive designer, Dawn Mello, changed all of that, dramatically reducing the number of pieces allowed to carry the evocative Gucci name and - crucially - hiring Tom Ford as womenswear designer. The Gucci revival was on track, not least in hundreds of luxuriously appointed stores around the world. The vision of Guccio Gucci - desirable pieces for the discerning wealthy - once again became the vision of Gucci the label.
