We think – and hope – that Mater represents the future of design. Melding a focus on sustainability with Scandinavian design ideals like visual simplicity and functionality has carved out a space in the market for the Danish brand. From seating to storage and decorations, Mater products are tied together by common threads, which is a sign of clear, intentional design vision. To ensure that each product, no matter what it is, fits squarely into the same criteria as everything else, from style to quality standards, is a sign of something great. Today we’re exploring our favourite lighting from the Mater collection.

Mater Terho Lamp

Can you guess what ‘terho’ means in Finnish? Correct, ‘acorns’. Mater’s Terho Lamp is designed by Finnish designer Maija Puoskari who takes inspiration from nature. This lamp comes in three sizes: small, medium and large. Each takes on a different form of the flowing curves of an acorn. We love grouping together the different sizes of Terho to create a dynamic, sculptural display. If your room features a lighter colour palette, we recommend the ‘natural’ Terho which makes use of natural linden wood in combination with mouth-blown opal glass. For a darker room, opt for the ‘black’ Terho which exchanges natural wood for black linden wood and the opal glass shade for smoked glass.

Dome Lamp

Designed by Todd Bracher, Mater’s Dome Lamp is a timeless and iconic piece for any room. The minimal design emphasises the bold shape of the Dome Lamp, making it a quiet centrepiece. A spherical shade creates a gentle glow that diffuses evenly and warmly from the underside of the shade. As with all of Mater-certified designs, Dome Lamp’s simplicity is one of its greatest strengths – this understated desk lamp fits smoothly into residential or commercial decor.

Mater Firefly Lamp

Firefly Lamp is inspired by traditional flycatchers – glass containers containing a bit of sweet liquid used to tempt flies and other insects inside. Designer José de la O used this as a visual guide when designing this pendant light which blends textures to shape the light that it gives out. The lower part of the tubular glass lamp shade has been sandblasted to give it a misty appearance while the upper half is left completely clear. This design creates an interesting dynamic between the clear light of the top and the softer light of the bottom half. Like Terho, we think that Firefly looks best when arranged in a group hanging at slightly different heights.

Ray Wall Lamp

Mater’s Ray Wall Lamp shows off the studio’s ability to seamlessly blend the modern with the traditional. This wall lamp was designed by Danish design studio PEDERJESSEN and combines oak and steel in striking contrast. Using LED lights means that Ray is a very low-energy lighting option for any modern interior. Ray makes a strong reference to Nordic minimalism through the materials used and the focus on functionality. Magnets hold the wooden globe shade within the steel shell so that the beam can be positioned in any direction.

Luiz Pendant Lamp

The Luiz Pendant Lamp showcases Mater’s pioneering sustainability. The shade is made in Portugal from locally harvested cork from a cork oak tree. These trees have an average lifespan of more than 200 years and can be harvested every 9 years without causing any damage to the tree. Not only that, the cork used for Luiz is harvested from responsibly managed cork oak forests, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council which ensures that cork production is protected alongside the local biodiversity. This statement pendant light is sure to spark conversations while, like all Mater products, suiting any interior.
