Epitomising Scandinavian design values, Northern takes inspiration from the creative prowess of Norway. An attitude of building on the past rather than replacing it means that Norwegian design sees modern creative mindsets meet traditional crafting methods, contemporary beauty clashing with rough-cut contrasts. That’s what makes Scandinavian design so exciting, while the final product is often a pared-back product with clean lines and minimal detailing, it captures the essence of a country’s history and art through unexpected means.
The creative studio is driven by the desire to perfectly combine beauty with functionality by using natural materials and genuine craftsmanship. They see furniture and interior accessories as the natural fit for this mission as it enables them to express their characteristic style on a different scale. Favouring a neutral colour palette over anything bold in order to highlight the subtle geometry and elegant sensibilities of the designs, Northern-adorned interiors are flexible, creative spaces that boast style and spirit in equal measures.
While we love all of the brand's products, we’re particularly enamoured by the creative flair of their lighting, so here are our top five picks of all their floor lamps and pendant lights.
A departure from their typical minimalist aesthetic, the Heat pendant is made of a brass mesh that has been fashioned to mimic a ball of fire. When the light is turned on, the brass glows a deep orange hue, but when turned off, the brass becomes a tranquil dark cloud. This dynamic design is sure to lend any space creative character.
Hence the name, the Acorn light is inspired by the empty shell of an acorn. Being inspired by the natural shape lends the form organic contours and an understated profile. Connecting to the ceiling with a silk cord that travels through a ceiling canopy in the same style as the shade, the whole effect is mesmerising and fluid.
Each Reveal shade is completely unique having been blown into shape by master glass blowers, harking back to the studio's interest in combining traditional techniques with modern design. The elegant design sees the smooth sphere of glass held in place by the bar bulb within, creating a relationship between structure, shade and light source.
One of Northern’s favoured designs, Birdy lamp was originally designed in 1952 by Norwegian electricity company Sønnico. Linking the country’s history to the modern day, Northern have updated the iconic design’s colour schemes and materials while preserving the original shape and functional features.
Me lamp is so called because it is a lamp designed for you. Featuring a completely stripped back design, the lamp was conceptualised to fit seamlessly into any environment, to facilitate a quiet moment of relaxation. Hoping the help you find a bit of breathing space in a fast-paced world, whether that’s in the ethereally simple design or the functionality of the adjustable neck, Me lamp embodies the beauty of a minimalist approach to design.
