Stone Island’s obsession with fabric innovation has never been subtle. Since 1982, the Italian brand has made a habit of experimenting with materials most labels wouldn’t dream of touching, pushing the boundaries of what outerwear can look and feel like. Now, it’s pulling back the curtain on some of its most groundbreaking work with Stone Island Material Science – a new series designed to explore the brand’s most iconic fabrics.

First up is Raso Gommato – a material that’s been central to Stone Island’s story since 1984. Originally conceived as a cotton satin base bonded with a polyurethane film, it was designed to be both water- and wind-resistant, without sacrificing softness. The name itself speaks to the alchemy at work – raso for the satin weave, gommato for the rubberised finish. The result? A fabric that feels luxurious yet bulletproof, equally at home in the city or on the terraces.

Over the years, Raso Gommato has been a canvas for some of Stone Island’s most audacious experiments – from ripstop overlays and reverse colour processes to hand-painted camouflage. Each iteration has pushed the fabric somewhere new, but it’s the latest version that feels like a fitting debut for Material Science.

Stone Island Material Science for SS25

For Spring/Summer 2025, Raso Gommato returns in a three-layer construction, this time bonded to a breathable, water-resistant membrane. As always, the magic happens in the treatment. Garments are assembled from a white, ready-to-dye base, then washed in resin before a unique camouflage pattern is laser-etched into the fabric. The finishing touch comes in the dye bath – subtle, tonal camo revealed through the colour process, giving each piece a singular finish.

It’s classic Stone Island – technical, experimental, and quietly brilliant. More than four decades on, the brand is still finding new ways to transform a jacket into something closer to a science project. Material Science is proof that, for Stone Island, the fabric has always been the real story.
