Finding the perfect autumn-winter shoe tends to be a trade-off. You want something that can handle wet pavements, muddy parks and the occasional weekend in the hills, but preferably without looking like you've wandered into town directly from the Spine Race.
This is the sort of gap the Nike ACG Zegama Trail GORE-TEX fills. Technically, it's a highly capable waterproof trail-running shoe. But unless you're planning on lining up for an ultra anytime soon, we'd argue it's equally well suited to life as an everyday autumn-winter sneaker.
Why? Because it combines the things you actually want from outdoor footwear – waterproofing, grip and plenty of cushioning – with a low-profile silhouette that looks just as comfortable pounding city pavements as it does splashing through puddles somewhere more scenic.
A trail shoe built for bad weather
The Zegama isn't new, but its recent move under the ACG umbrella has brought some useful all-conditions upgrades with it.
Most importantly for anyone staring down the barrel of another British winter, this version is a full-blown GORE-TEX sneaker. That means more protection from rain and puddles than your average mesh running shoe, without resorting to the bulky construction of a traditional hiking boot.
There's plenty going on underneath too. Nike uses its lightweight ZoomX foam directly beneath the foot, backed up with a layer of Cushlon 3.0 for additional stability and impact protection on uneven surfaces.
Then there's the sole. Vibram Megagrip rubber and Traction Lug technology provide the sort of serious underfoot traction you'd expect from dedicated trail footwear, while a roomy forefoot allows the toes to spread naturally when negotiating rough ground.
Technical without looking too technical
Performance aside, the real reason we're interested in the Zegama Trail GORE-TEX is that it looks great.
In news that will shock absolutely no one, trail-running footwear has become increasingly commonplace away from the trails over the past few years. Salomon's transformation from specialist outdoor brand to fashion-world fixture has certainly helped, as has the broader enthusiasm for technical clothing that shows no sign of disappearing.
The Nike ACG Zegama Trail GORE-TEX fits neatly into that world. It's unmistakably a trail shoe, with a chunky sculpted sole, technical upper and oversized Swoosh, but it's not going to look awkward under a pair of jeans.
The colourways are particularly good too. Black and Anthracite is the obvious choice if you want something that will disappear beneath most outfits, while Black, Cream II and Cave Stone introduces some lighter detailing without becoming difficult to wear.
Both manage that characteristically ACG trick of looking technical without tipping over into full-on mountaineering cosplay.
Available from Nike's online store for £174.99, it's certainly at the premium end of the trail-running spectrum. But viewed as a shoe capable of pulling double duty throughout autumn and winter, rather than something reserved exclusively for running through forests, the proposition starts to make considerably more sense. And crucially, when you arrive at the pub, nobody is going to ask why you're wearing hiking boots.
