There are plenty of New Balance trainers worth getting excited about, but few carry quite the same weight as the iconic 990 line. First introduced in 1982, it was the shoe that established the Boston-based brand as a serious contender in the premium running footwear market, before eventually becoming one of the most recognisable silhouettes in menswear. Now, four years after the arrival of the 990v6, the seventh generation has officially landed in the UK, bringing with it a fresh look, updated technology and a reassuring amount of grey suede.

The New Balance 990v7 is the latest evolution of the brand's flagship Made in USA sneaker, and while it might look like another grey dad shoe to the untrained eye, there's plenty going on beneath the surface.

The New Balance 990v7

A familiar face with a few new tricks

Where the outgoing 990v6 leaned into a more futuristic aesthetic, the v7 takes a slightly more traditional approach. The upper has been streamlined, with revised proportions, layered suede panels and a larger 'N' logo that recalls some of the earlier, much-loved iterations.

The debut 'Kool Grey' colourway is classic New Balance territory. Various shades of grey pigskin suede and breathable mesh are complemented by subtle pale-blue and yellow accents, while tumbled leather detailing adds another premium touch. It's understated, versatile and unlikely to look dated any time soon.

Underfoot, there's a softer version of the FuelCell cushioning introduced on the v6, designed to provide improved comfort and energy return. This works alongside ENCAP technology, a CR heel device and a new TPU midfoot shank for added stability and support. In other words, it's still built with running-shoe technology, even if its natural habitat these days is more likely to be a coffee shop than a starting line.

Four decades of getting it right

The original 990 was famously developed with the ambition of creating the best running shoe money could buy. When it launched in 1982, its $100 price tag was practically unheard of for a trainer. But the gamble paid off, and the model has remained a cornerstone of New Balance's range ever since.

Over the years, the 990 has made the unlikely transition from serious performance footwear to suburban dad uniform to bona fide fashion staple. Its appeal lies partly in the fact that it has never tried particularly hard to be fashionable. The proportions, materials and muted colours have always done the talking, and the v7 looks set to continue that tradition.

The launch is accompanied by a global campaign featuring Rosalía, Josh Allen, Cooper Flagg and IU, reflecting just how broad the 990's appeal has become.

Where to buy the New Balance 990v7

The New Balance Made in USA 990v7 is available now, priced at £210. The inaugural 'Kool Grey' colourway is available through New Balance and selected retailers, with further colourways expected to follow.

At £210, it's certainly not cheap, but then the 990 never has been. And if the previous six versions have taught us anything, it's that a good grey New Balance has a considerably longer shelf life than your average hyped sneaker.
