With new design power at the helm in the form of Oliver Moores, Frescobol Carioca’s Brazilian take on menswear has taken form and been given its strongest direction to date. The label’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection is backed not only by the brand’s signature Rio attitude, but also by more substantial inspirations taken from landscape artist Roberto Burle Marx. You haven’t heard of Burle Marx? He’s the man responsible for much of Rio De Janeiro’s creative character, laying the ground of public spaces with abstract, statement-making patterns.

Under Moores’ new creative direction, Frescobol Carioca sees a new lease of life - not that it needed it, but we’re not complaining. Bold patterns dominate the new collection, from camp collar shirts to swim shorts and the famous frescobol bats. We’ve picked five of our favourite pieces from the sun-soaked new season so clear some room in your suitcase, you’ll be needing it.

Frescobol Carioca Caminho Print Camp Collar Shirt

There’s something eternally summery about the camp collar: the open fastening widens the collar to shoulder-relaxing effect. Combine the inherently laid-back design with a burnt orange and navy Caminho print that draws on Burle Marx’s hand-drawn plans of the pathways that wind their way through his gardens and parks, as well as the environmentally friendly 100% Tencel construction and you’ve got a recipe for one of 2020’s best summer shirts.

Frescobol Carioca Linha Tailored Swim Shorts

As Frescobol Carioca co-founder Harry Brantly noted in our interview with him last year, it no longer suffices to have just one pair of swim shorts. Perhaps you favour a pair of elasticated waist shorts for playing in the waves, but if you’re heading for a dip before a wander around town, opt for tailored shorts. Reach for this season’s new Linha print tailored shorts, the print is based on Burle Marx's designs for mosaic tiled walkways. This slim-fit pair offers a touch of modernist design to your summer ensembles.

Frescobol Carioca Pepe Camp Collar Shirt

Tailored to a regular fit, this short-sleeved camp collar shirt is made from 100% Tencel, a sustainable, lightweight alternative to cotton. Featuring a hypnotic Pepe print, this shirt acts as the perfect highlight for an outfit; one of the season’s strongest patterns, we’re looking forward to styling it with muted tones to emphasise its energy.

Frescobol Carioca Leblon Beach Bat Set

Boasting a 17-piece wooden construction, each Frescobol Carioca bat is made in the brand's Brazilian workshop by two highly skilled workers using wood offcuts. Because of this, each bat has its own character, weight and colour. We simply couldn't do a Frescobol Carioca round up without mentioning the frescobol bats themselves.

Frescobol Carioca Linen Beach Towel

A long way from Britain's love of heavy beach towels, this 100% linen towel is large enough for two to sunbathe but folds small enough to carry easily in your bag. Quick-drying and sufficiently versatile to be used as a shawl or sarong, this may be the ultimate beach companion.
