If there is one thing you can guarantee with every new season, unlike the weather, is that military styles and silhouettes will influence what we wear in some way, shape or form. And one item that constantly survives the celestial seasons is the bomber jacket. Originally designed for American cockpit pilots in the First World War, the classic bomber remains one of the most stylish outerwear options out there; meaning it’s ideal for the rest of winter, the approach into spring and for the entire year ahead.

The classic silhouette is immersed in military tradition- which in itself provides reliability, versatility and an air of self-assurance. Not only is the bomber jacket flattering, thanks to its waist-minimising and shoulder-accentuating shape, but it is also highly versatile whether it be paired with jeans and sneakers or shirt and trousers.

With Spring collections beginning to land online at OPUMO, we thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to a few of our favourite bomber jackets. Although, this is no ordinary list. As, this year, we’re not solely advocating oversized or classic utilitarian styles – instead, this season lends itself to traditional cuts, lightweight silhouettes and new, modernised adaptations. Check out the full edit below.

The Classic: Wax London Khaki Skipton Bomber Jacket

A khaki-coloured wool bomber makes a softer, sophisticated alternative to the more prevalent styles. It not only adds welcome tonal contrast to a backdrop of blacks and greys, but it’s also a great piece for the transition between seasons, enabling you to bulk up with a sweater while preserving that essential laid-back air that the bomber jacket brings.

The Modern: mfpen Black Tress Collared Bomber

By focussing on trans-seasonal essentials, which according to the brand was born from keeping the ‘unreliable Scandinavian weather in mind,’ mfpen excels in modern oversized cuts and innovative fabric choices. The Tress Collared Bomber is a case in point, as its cropped boxy fit is complemented by a water repellent outer, a two-way YKK Vislon zipper, a fully quilted padded lining and a detachable collar closure for added protection.

The Statement Bomber: Mews Brick Keisuke Bomber Jacket

Made in Mallorca in a small workshop manned by four local artisans, the Keisuke Bomber from Mews is a modern adaptation of the traditional aviator jacket with two front pockets and a classic elasticated waist for enhanced shape. Mews fuse the staple utilitarian aesthetic with a premium Spanish lamb leather that is finished in a rich brick red colour hue and a double-roller Riri zipper that allows you to personalise the way you wear the jacket.

The All-Weather Bomber: The Workers Club Reversible Down Filled Bomber

A refreshing interpretation of the bomber, The Workers Club’s down-filled bomber jacket is cleverly designed to adapt to changing weather conditions – something that cannot be undervalued in January. Crafted from a super lightweight microfibre for a breathable and versatile feel, this reversible design can also be worn to show either the army-green or navy blue side – both of which have useful cotton-drill patch pockets at the front.
