Led by Guillaume Philibert, Amsterdam-based footwear label Filling Pieces have introduced two new sport-inspired silhouettes to its latest assortment of Spring/Summer sneakers, by taking inspiration from the basketball sneakers the designers wore as children.
Basketball, with the help of Michael Jordan and more recently through the likes of Lebron, KD, Kyrie, Steph and Westbrook, continues to change and innovate the athletic sneaker game. More importantly, over the years’ basketball has touched the young minds of Filling Pieces’ design team, which is why the brand’s latest collection takes direct inspiration from the vintage basketball sneakers of the youth. In conjunction with the all new Filling Pieces SS18 collection which landed at OPUMO this week, the brand has introduced two brand new silhouettes that are modern interpretations of retro basketball designs, yet in typical Filling Pieces style, they are reimagined with the luxury materials and contemporary details that the brand is known and loved for.
First up, the Filling Pieces ‘Lay Up Icey 2 Flow’ appears in a variety of new colourways throughout the release, and it blurs the lines between luxury and modern sports footwear. Crafted from extremely supply leather, the sneakers’ uppers give a comfortable box-fresh fit time after time. While a thin, leather-lined interior helps the shoe mould to the wearer’s foot with wear and a variety of stark colourways place emphasis on the sneakers’ artistic details, like the sculpted ‘Icey’ midsole and press stud heel pull.
Meanwhile, the aptly named Filling Pieces ‘Alley Oop High Icey’ adopts a higher, stronger and altogether more aggressive silhouette that takes inspiration from 90’s basketball sneakers. Not the rubberised sneakers worn in the NBA, but the ones worn by the kids on the streets. The sneakers’ X cross straps – which mimic how athletes tape their ankles – keep your feet locked in and give an unparalleled fit and unique athletic detailing. The Alley Oop Sneakers also utilise the ‘Icey’ midsole alongside nubuck uppers, a taller tongue and triangular perforations that give the silhouette a razor sharp aesthetic.
