As menswear essentials go, you'd be hard pressed to find a collection as cultivated or comfortable as the new Sunspel selection of t-shirts, polos and lightweight jackets. Since opening its doors for business in 1860, Sunspel has risen through the ranks to become recognised as one of Britain’s greatest sartorial exports. Its history is dotted with pivotal moments, one of which being in 1947 when the brand introduced the boxer short to the UK. With a firm belief in simple cuts and the best materials, Sunspel is a perennial heavyweight in UK fashion.
A reserved but confident attitude towards clothing is a signifier of the British psyche that backs Sunspel, and that attitude runs throughout all of their collections. Sunspel’s newest collection sees more of a focus on sportier and more practical pieces, but don’t fear, we’re still treated to the classic polo shirts and sweaters.
Today, we're welcoming Sunspel SS19 to OPUMO, and to celebrate we've picked five of our favourite things we want from the brand's new collection, below.
Sunspel’s venture into technical clothing begins with the Half Zip Track Top. The lightweight cotton-nylon blend is insulating, sleek and comfortable. The half zip feature means that this piece is extremely versatile for styling and for more practical reasons like temperature. While many dedicated track tops can only be worn while doing exercise, Sunspel’s adherence to their values of minimalism and premium quality manufacturing show through in how sleek this piece looks. Wear this top over a plain white t-shirt, and wrap up with a double-breasted woollen overcoat – this is layering made easy.
Sunspel’s casual take on the classic Harrington jacket sees it remade with a cotton knit. This opens the jacket up to many more styling possibilities. Again, this piece is ideal for layering because it is neither just a jacket nor just a jumper. Constructed of Italian-spun long staple cotton, and manufactured using a minimal Milano stitch, the Harrington is immaculately clean, combine this with the sporty front zip and you’ve got the ideal layer: wear this under a light worker’s jacket.
It’s simple: nobody does polo shirts like Sunspel. We think this could be the best one yet. Made of the rarest cotton in the world, Sea Island cotton is grown in the Caribbean. The cotton has an extremely long staple fibre that gives it strength and unrivalled softness. We recommend sporting this soft and breathable layer underneath a crewneck jumper.
This piece embodies the concept of Sunspel’s new collection. When the waistline is hidden, the garment-dyed blue slate trousers are an elegant, tapered fit that looks great with sneakers or more formal shoes alike. We actually love the waistline though, so we’re styling these with a tucked in white t-shirt and some clean athletic sneakers.
You probably know by now that Sunspel has played a pretty pivotal role in the birth of the universal staple, so it’s fair to say they know a fair bit about what makes the best t-shirts around. Made in England using long-staple cotton for unparalleled softness, lightness and comfort, Sunspel’s crew neck t-shirt has a classic fit and only the most essential details. You can’t ask for much more, to be honest.
